Nobody particularly enjoys the idea of moving. Even if it’s a change for the best, moving home is said to be one of the most stressful experiences you may have in life. The list of things to do while moving might seem overwhelming, whether you move frequently or this is your first time.

Avoid letting stress control you! Sieve through our thorough moving house checklist so you can quickly cross off the necessities and monitor your progress before, during, and after the big day. Therefore, exhale and begin. You won’t have much time to adjust to your new house.

1. Make Sure You’re Organised

Write down what has to be done and when as soon as you are aware that you are moving. Start as much of it as you can in advance. As much as possible, don’t wait until three to four weeks before the major event. Everything from mortgages to relocations, broadband to house insurance, we can assist with.

Also, try to create a plan with what must be done each day leading up to the move. A simple list with multiple tasks that have been tracked can help you stay organised and prevent any last-minute, unnecessary stress.

Try to pack items from the least used rooms first. That way, if something isn’t found it won’t be missed.

2. Compare Removals Quotes

You could opt for hiring a packing service, or just ask for help loading/unloading your furniture and boxes. In lieu of choosing the company that is cheapest, obtain (at the minimum) four quotations and choose the one that best fits your relocation.

If you don’t have a lot of belongings, all you need is a vehicle and one person to help load and unload. You could opt for renting a van for transport, or use your own car if it’s large enough.

It’s important to make sure you have adequate space and the right type of vehicle to ensure all your possessions arrive safely at their destination.

3. Start The Packing Process Early

Since packing is such a daunting process, many movers put it off. This procedure, however, can appear much less intimidating if you break it down into manageable chunks.

Get a head start on packing by starting the process as soon as possible. This will also give you time to plan properly, and figure out what items you want to keep and what things should be disposed of.

Make sure to label each box clearly and indicate its contents so that when you arrive at your new home, unpacking will be easier for you.

4. Verify Your Furniture Fits

A common moving day issue is erroneously estimating the size of doors and entrances. The most common source of stress is flat-pack furniture that you have previously assembled yourself.

Measure it to see if it has to be disassembled once again, and then leave yourself plenty of time to accomplish it. Verify whether the huge couches’ feet and arms are detachable.  If the pieces are too big to fit through the door, you’ll need to look for a way to make them slimmer. Investigate if your furniture has any drawers, shelves, or additional parts that can be easily removed as well.

Don’t forget that there may be other fixtures in your new home that could also cause problems. You need to assess the stairways, hallways, and door frames to figure out if they’re wide enough to fit all your belongings.

5. Make Sure All Wires & Cables Are Managed Properly

Wires like chargers, audio cables, and network cords can quickly create a tangled mess if not properly managed. Taking the time to secure, organise and manage all your wires and cables can make for a much more efficient relocation.

Invest in plastic cable ties and attach them to each wire. This will help you keep all the wires together, preventing them from getting tangled up. You can also label the cables based on their purpose, making it easier to find them when needed.

If possible, bundle any cords that don’t need to be plugged into a device directly. For example, Ethernet cables can be bundled together and kept out of the way. You may also want to invest in a few wire shelving or desk organisers to keep your cords in one place.

6. Pack a Survival Package When Moving

When you are moving, it’s important to remember all the little things that you may need when you first arrive at your new home. To ensure that everything goes smoothly during the move, pack an essentials box. This way, you won’t be searching for things in haste after arriving at your new location.

You don’t need to bring your entire wardrobe with you in the essential box, but consider putting a few items of clothing, such as pyjamas or comfortable shoes. Additionally, pack toiletries and other useful items such as phone chargers, keys, phones, and laptops. Generally speaking, if you think there is something that could be useful early on in the move, then it’s wise to have it on you.

If you’re moving office, you may want to pack office supplies such as pens, staples, and paper. This way, you can start work straight away without having to re-purchase all the items in your new area.

Should you venture abroad, an overseas moving company can help make the transition smoother by shipping essential items to your destination before you arrive. This way, when you get there, you will have everything that you need to make the move a success.

7. Pay Attention to Your Gas and Electric Bills

If you believe the energy provider used by the former occupants is fleecing, switch. Switching can save those on providers’ basic tariff rate, and while margins have shrunk since the energy crisis, it’s still worthwhile to see whether it can reduce prices.

If you believe the energy provider used by the former occupants is fleecing, switch. Switching can save those on providers’ basic tariff rate, and while margins have shrunk since the energy crisis, it’s still worthwhile to see whether it can reduce prices.

Make sure that the meter readings are correct and accurate. Double-check that the energy supplier is billing you correctly by asking them to look over your readings. Ask for a projected bill to help you budget, as well as an estimated reading date so you can plan ahead.

8. Update Your TV Licence

You must notify the TV licensing firm of your address change if you intend to watch TV at your new residence. To ensure sure you’re protected starting on the day you move in, provide them with your new location and the day you’re relocating.

In some cases, you may have to update your TV licence more than once if you’re moving from one place to another. If this is the case, follow the same steps each time and make sure you provide accurate information so that you’re legally covered. Usually, this can be done online or over the phone, but some forms need to be printed and mailed in.

9. Parking Permits & Applications

You might wish to apply for a parking permit in advance of relocating if you’re going to a parking spot that is just for residents.

You must get in touch with your local government if you want to apply for a parking permit. Furthermore, if a private residential parking program is available, you can apply directly through it.

10. Get to Know Your Neighbours

Your neighbours are valuable resources that can help make your transition smoother. Get to know them if you plan on staying in the area for a while. They can give you tips on local businesses, services, and events, as well as provide friendly conversation which can be great when transitioning into a new home.

In addition, if you’re ever in need of a hand or have to leave for an extended period of time, your neighbours can prove to be invaluable. You may even make some long-lasting friendships by introducing yourself and getting to know the people living around you.
